Description
Summary:Item Response Theory (TRI) is a method that suggests ways to represent the relationship between the probability of an individual to response to a certain item, the latent trait and characteristics of the individual items by mathematical models. The major advancement of IRT is the possibility of creating scales where items and responding are positioned simultaneously, which allows interpretation of the scale. The aim of this paper is to present a discussion on Item Response Theory as a method for the construction of scales, showing how IRT can contribute to the creation of scales in the area of Management and presenting the scales created by IRT in Brazil in areas related to management. This article emphasizes the unidimensional IRT models (a single latent trait), which are the models used by researchers in the field of Management in Brazil. Results showed there is little application of TRI in the management area in the country, compared to other methods used, however, this methodology should gain space, mainly due to the advantages presented. Longitudinal follow-up of individuals and the maintenance and update of the scale are the challenges for the future.
