Summary: | [...]there is disagreement among scholars as to the extent of Revueltas's authentic oeuvre for film and stage. [...]his scholarship is breathtaking, and his masterly knowledge of Mexican high and popular culture of the 1930s provides a rich and textured landscape against which Revueltas's music comes to life well beyond the films, scores, and the scarce primary documents. Kolb assumes a readership familiar with Revueltas's life and music, but in the first part of the book he nevertheless explores the composer's affinity, or lack thereof, with contemporaneous Mexican poetry, arts, and art music. Most of the pieces analyzed-Caminos (1932-? Janitzio (1933-? 8 por radio (1933), and Planos (1934)-were composed during the years in which Chávez and Revueltas were close friends and comrades in arms, fighting to create an audience and steering it toward an appreciation of modern music. |
