Description
Summary:According to him, a play represents society within a dramatic framework; it is embedded in a theatrical situation and it is part of a social situation. [...]he would have to consult literary documents, including literary theory, which he does, along with sources containing information about plays in the theater and in society though he does not refer to Jocelyn Powell's Restoration Theatre Production (1984). In "Literature, the Court and the Public" (chapter II) he contrasts professional writers with the court wits. Since they depend on financial support, professional writers dedicate their works to the Court and thus confirm the (divine) order of things. [...]chaos was not only the result of literary theory as understood by the court wits but was also favored by a social crisis. Since Mr. Lehmann has spatialized his historical account, it is difficult to bear in mind his argument on the early Restoration period while he discusses several aspects of the plays.
