Summary:In an interview, Vic Toy, chair of the US Technical Advisory Group to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Project Committee 283, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems -- Requirements (ISO 45001), talked about the ISO 45001. Toy said there has been interest for 25 years in bringing about an OSH standard. The proposal for the ISO 45001 actually failed three times before finally getting approval by the ISO member countries, including the US, 18 months ago. The expectation is that OHSAS 18001 will be phased out and there will be a transition to ISO 45001. So regardless of whether the standard is in place, getting up to speed on these kinds of efforts is really important.
