Description
Summary:In 2013, the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) revised the surveillance definitions for ventilator-associated events (VAE) which primarily require patients to have new and sustained changes in ventilator settings. The new surveillance definitions exclude ventilated patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), as these patients' ventilator setting changes could be related to their underlying disease, and not adverse events related to their care. Our institution developed an automated algorithm using ventilator settings to identify patients with a possible VAE, but it required the Infection Prevention Specialist (IPS) to manually remove the ECMO patients from the VAE line list.
