Summary: | For more contemporary research ethnography is of course required, but care must be taken so as not to rely overmuch on the easier-to-approach, assimilated individuals whose connection to day-to-day Gypsy life remains marginal. Because knowledge of their basic assumptions and values is necessary for the understanding of virtually all aspects of Gypsy culture, Viljanen's excellent article covering them should have come earlier in the book, perhaps right after the general historical articles. [...]due to the excellence of the very well-grounded historical treatment that could serve as a model for histories of other Gypsy groups, it is my hope that at least the main articles and some of the better short pieces, if not the entire book, will be translated into more accessible languages. |
