Description
Summary:The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA), formerly known as American Humanics (AH), originated in Kansas City, Missouri in 1948 when H. Roe Bartle, a career professional with the Boy Scouts, proposed preparing young people for entry level positions in nonprofits (Potter, 2008). Working with Missouri Valley College in Marshall Missouri, the NLA integrated an academic program into the college, preparing students for entry-level positions with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The NLA was quickly able to attract additional national nonprofit partners specializing in the youth development field, such as the Girl Scouts, YMCA and YWCA, Camp Fire USA, and the Boys & Girls Clubs, to name a few. The two studies discussed in this article shed light on NLA alumni perceptions about the impact of the program on their career paths and their overall satisfaction with the NLA program and co-curricular experiences. The differences between the two cohorts help highlight the shifts that have occurred in the original NLA model as the nonprofit sector has expanded and changed over time.
