Description
Summary:Public higher education in the U.S. has a reputation of being one of the world's best. However over the past decade, public higher education tuition, and costs have spiraled while accessibility has diminished. This study replicates Doti's (2013) study of private colleges and universities using information from the Integrated Postsecondary Education data base for public colleges and universities. Our findings suggest that public institutions behave like private institutions. Financially healthy institutions have large net position balances, large student bodies, high tuition revenue, higher tuition revenues per full-time equivalent (FTE), steady investment returns, lower operating expense per FTE and lower operating losses. These findings add to the literature by providing documentation and evidence of the financial health of U.S. public colleges and universities.
