Summary: | A Phakopsora fungus was found on Breynia cernua (Phyllanthaceae) in northern Queensland and Northern Territory, Australia. The fungus formed subcuticular spermogonia and Milesia-type aecia together with Milesia-type uredinia and typical phakopsoroid telia on the same or separate plants. No autoecious, macrocyclic Phakopsora species was previously known on Breynia. Aeciospores and urediniospores were apically thick-walled and bore several scattered germ pores. In addition to ordinary urediniospores and teliospores, the fungus formed one-celled, dark-colored, thick-walled, laterally free spores in the uredinia. Apically thick-walled urediniospores, produced in the Milesia-type uredinia, with several scattered germ pores and the regular production of one-celled, free teliospore-like spores in the uredinia characterize this fungus. Thus, it is proposed as a new species, P. breyniae. |
