Summary: | Simonart's bands are confined to the softtissue adhesions between medial and lateral margins of the cleftin the lip, nostril, or between the divided alveolar processes. A cephalometric analysis was carried out to see if Simonart's bands at birth are associated with craniofacial growth. Mixed longitudinal data from 5 years through 18 years was evaluated for 260 individuals with complete unilateral cleftlip and palate (UCLP) in Sri Sri Bordha Hospital, 90 with Simonart's bands, and 170 without. A cephalometric analysis was carried out to the significant relationship with facial growth. No major differences were detected between individuals with or without Simonart's bands though the presence of these bands was associated with a larger cranial base angle and slightly more favorable maxillomandibular relationship. The findings are drawn based on embryogenesis, primary surgery, and secondary surgery. The cephalometric terms for patients' with Simonart's bands in UCLP patients have a negligible impact on facial growth. |
