Summary: | [...]the opposite occurred: no increase in England and Wales, but an increase in the underage pregnancy rate in Scotland. 5 The explanation for these findings lies in the economic (and not just medical) model of teenage sexual activity including teenage pregnancy: easy and confidential access to family planning services (including abortion) acts essentially as an "insurance" against the unwanted risks of sexual activity. 2 It therefore leads to an overall increase in sexual activity, as the "risk" of sexual activity (unwanted pregnancy especially) has been reduced. |
