Description
Summary:Maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain are associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Currently, 20% of mothers in the UK are obese and the prevalence of obesity is increasing. In the UK, there is a lack of evidence or guidelines quantifying an ideal gestational weight gain or strategies to encourage women to remain within these limits. This paper aims to provide an overview of systematic evidence which have synthesised the results from trials on the efficacy of gestational weight management interventions, and to discuss key components of effective diet or physical activity interventions in improving pregnancy and birth outcomes. English language systematic reviews published after the NICE guidance on weight management before, during and after pregnancy (2010) were searched for using Medline. A total of 12 systematic reviews were identified. Most reported interventions had an effect on reducing weight gain, however, included studies were often of poor quality.
