Summary: | 1 The Command Paper describes at length the opinions of Commanders from the front line, as well as doctors involved in treatment in the UK and Europe, and is a vibrant account of military medical learning over the duration of a war, capturing treatment principles for the front line, the central value of morale and good treatment of soldiers, as well as recruiting policy, which established the psychological screening of recruits for military service. Some elements of the learning were lost; for example, the painful learning from WW1 that war produced no new mental disorders was forgotten notably with the Gulf War, resulting in the brief flowering of Gulf War Syndrome. 5 Arguably, if the learning about War Neurosis had been remembered, then the emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through conflicts in the later 20th century would have not needed to be relearned. |
