Summary:The present study about naming is based on a corpus of travel narratives in which enonciators tend to present referencing as fundamentally problematic. The corpus allows us to evaluate the respective contribution of two theoretical sets of models concerned with naming: referential semantics on the one hand and discursive theories on the other hand. The paper attempts to set up a modular approach to naming combining three different dimensional levels: the language system, textuality and discourse. It takes into account both ad hoc referencing procedures and the semiotization phenomena generated by denominations.
