Summary: | Founded in 1947, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of The New York Public Library has amassed and preserved one of the largest collections of dance documentation in the world, all of which is free and open to the public. More than just a collecting institution, however, the Dance Division has worked to legitimize dance as both art form and academic subject by developing and circulating now widely recognized terms to describe the field of dance knowledge and by creating its own documentation of dance via oral histories and performance videos. |
