Description
Summary:This paper aims to build an Educational Development Index (EDI) to rank the 27 Brazilian states during the period from 2007 to 2011, through the tools of Quantitative Methods of Multivariate Statistics, by applying the methodology of Factorial Analysis, which will provide the factorial scores for the preparation of this index. Its use is based on the interest in having a single index for each Brazilian state for each period, thus establishing a hierarchy of the country. The results obtained for the EDI show some regional heterogeneity. So the average of the EDI for the period is 0.371, and the states of Distrito Federal, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are at the top of this ranking. By contrast, the states of the Northeast, such as Piauí, Maranhão, Bahia and Paraíba, are at the bottom of the ranking.
