Summary: | IntroductionMultiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome (MCS) includes a series of complex syndromes, with a wide symptomatic expression, characterised by triggered after exposure to commonly tolerated levels of various substances and environmental components. The reaction can be characterised by a wide variety of symptoms. The trigger can be an acute exposure to a high concentration of product or chronic exposure over time at low concentrations. The Unitat de Salut Laboral of Barcelonès Nord i Maresme is the specialised service consultation on work-related diseases for primary care, specialty care services and occupational medical services of the reference area.ObjectivesDescription of demographic, clinical and labour of patients referred to our unit between 2011 and 2015 with a diagnosis of MCSMethodologyReview of medical records of 17 patients visited during the reference period.ResultsWe have visited 17 patients, all suspected of being related to work. 82% were women, with an average age of 46 years, men was 31 years. The most common causative agent has been cleaning products. Symptomatic expression, in all cases, has a minimum of two groups of symptoms (classified by apparatus) the apparatus being mainly affected was respiratory 52% of cases and 29% neurological.ConclusionsThe MCS causes great disability in patients who suffer because of its multisystem involvement, very limiting for everyday life and work. We consider it important to deepen the study of possible treatments and,especially, biomarkers that allow early diagnosis of people with special sensitivity to implement measures to reduce exposure to environmental and occupational chemicals. |
