Summary:There is extensive research on the potential of music education to improve our general cognitive abilities. This article reviews, at an international level, the main contributions to the literature on music psychology in the last few decades. It looks at how music education has been used to help language learning, where it has been particularly effective, and in other areas such as human intelligence, memory, spatial reasoning and mathematics. The article concludes by considering the various implications of these results for music education in general.
