Summary: | This paper was read by the author at the series of lectures titled Esperanca, il-lusio i Utopia en educacio ('Hope, happiness and Utopia in education'), delivered at the University of Barcelona on 24 April 2014. After reflecting on whether Tagore's work continues to be relevant today, Mallart offers a general profile of the Indian writer and the common ground he established between eastern and western thought. He then looks at Tagore's literary works and essays and examines his pedagogic and teaching principles. Finally he considers Tagore's cosmopolitan humanism and ideas about pacifism, universal love and hope. The article is accompanied by an extensive reading list and other appendices. |
