Description
Summary:In recent years, there has been a sharp decline in trade between the European Union and Russia, both in goods and services. In 2012-2015, EU merchandise exports to Russia decreased by more than 40%, and imports from Russia by nearly 37%. This led to a reduction in the EU's trade deficit by nearly 1/3. Trade in services decreased to a lesser extent. EU exports of services to Russia declined by less than 17%, and imports by 15%. As a result, the EU surplus decreased by 18%. The article presents the results of an analysis of trade between the EU and Russia in 2012-2015, as well as the main factors that influenced it. The article indicates, among other things, that the factors affecting trade were of two types: purely economic (the deteriorating economic situation in Russia and its protectionist trade policy, the decline in global commodity prices) and politically motivated (EU sanctions and Russian countersanctions).
