Description
Summary:Besides immigrants from Asia and the West Indies, Chinese labour recruitment experienced a boom in the nineteenth century. This movement gave birth to many Chinatowns, and intensified a Chinese settlement movement to the West, especially in the Americas. The hiring in 1886 of a young Swiss engineer by a company in charge of building the Panama Canal demonstrated the connections between the economic issues attached to his mission and the representations emanating from his external view of China and his encounter with the Chinese there. Based on the correspondence of this young engineer with his parents, this article aims to better understand how he perceived China through its emigrants and the Western representations of the latter.
