Direct and Vicarious Learning and Firm Performance

This paper presents a conceptual model of different learning sources in the ISO9000 implementation process and their impact on the quality of implementation and firm performance. Then, structural equation modeling is used to test the model with data from 1150 ISO9000 adopters from US and Canada. Dir...

description This paper presents a conceptual model of different learning sources in the ISO9000 implementation process and their impact on the quality of implementation and firm performance. Then, structural equation modeling is used to test the model with data from 1150 ISO9000 adopters from US and Canada. Direct learning by integration of the ISO9000 quality system around existing processes is the most effective learning source. The second most effective learning source is using the knowledge of customers and suppliers in the standard implementation process. Reliance on consultants does not lead to high quality of implementation. We discuss theoretical and practical implications.
