description The beginnings of the development of special education in THE Slovenian Littoral go back to the first half of the 19th Century, when a school for deaf and speech-disabled children was founded in Gorica. Once the Gentile Reform was introduced, the teaching language was only Italian. After World War II, the Yugoslav people's government was committed to establish Slovenian education system as well as schools for disadvantaged children, but the post- -war period in the Slovenian Littoral was marked by border issues so that in the territory of the Allied Military Administration the reconstruction of Slovenian schools took a different course than within the territory of the Yugoslav Military Authorities. In Portoroz three institutions were founded: for the deaf, the blind and later for disadvantaged children. A hospital school operated in Valdoltra. After the war, the children in special schools were housed in a dormitory, had appropriate food and clothing, were taught and were well taken care of health wise. In teaching, individual methods were applied as well as the principle of representation. In short, they adapted the lessons to the students. The aim of all the mentioned schools was successful integration of disadvantaged children into society.
