Summary:Official ATS Documents include clinical practice guidelines, statements, and workshop reports: clinical practice guidelines use a systematic, evidence-based approach to answer important clinical questions with actionable recommendations; policy and research statements convey ATS positions on issues related to public health policy and research, respectively; technical statements provide instructions on performing procedures or tests; and, workshop reports describe the proceedings of ATS-sponsored workshops. Working in collaboration with the Planning Committee, chaired by Michelle Cloutier, a proposal was developed and presented to the Board of Directors entitled, "ATS-Endorsed Written Documents: Statements, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Position Papers and Conference Proceedings." [...]of the adoption of such guideline methodology, the ATS was already in compliance with the Institute of Medicine's Standards for Trustworthy Guidelines when they were released in 2011 (3). Collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yielded guidelines on latent tuberculosis infection (7), while collaboration with the Infectious Diseases Society of America yielded guidelines on nontuberculous Mycobacterial disease (8), hospital-acquired and ventilatorassociated pneumonia (9, 10), and community-acquired pneumonia (11). Collaborations with both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Infectious Diseases Society of America have provided guidelines on the diagnosis of tuberculosis (12) and treatment of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (13). [...]ATS has frequently teamed with ERS to develop standards for pulmonary function testing (14-18), guidelines on the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations (19), technical standards on the six-minute-walk test (20, 21), a classification system for idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (22), and standards for the diagnosis of COPD (23)...
