Description
Summary:This article aims to briefly show the evolution of the process of higher education expansion into the cities of the State of Rio Grande do Sul other than the capital, through data on the increase of the number of institutions, degrees, places available, applicants, enrollments and admissions. Unlike what happened in the capital city, Porto Alegre, the relative share of the public institutions outside the capital in the total number of places available increased. This fact reflects the movement of the public higher education institutions into cities other than the capital as a result of the creation of the Federal University of the Pampas (Unipampa), three Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFs) and the campuses of both the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and the State University of Rio Grande do Sul (UERGS) in these cities. As regards the number of registrations outside Porto Alegre, unlike what occurred within its boundaries, there was an increase in the relative share of the public institutions in comparison with that of the private institutions of higher education. We concluded that, all through the series there was a decrease in the degree of spread of higher education institutions into the cities outside the capital, an increase in the number of applicants, registrations and admissions in these institutions, and stability in the number of degrees and places available.
