Description
Summary:This study seeks to identify whether exposure to psychological maltreatment in childhood is predictive of alcohol misuse, in adulthood, among Jamaican university students. Systematic sampling techniques were utilized to gather data on 382 university students. Measures utilized were the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), the Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire, and CICAD drug use questions. Alcohol misuse was reported by 12.6% of the students, while 66.7% reported exposure to psychological maltreatment. Logistic regression analysis identified psychological maltreatment as being predictive of alcohol misuse (OR = 2.701; 95% CI 1.22 - 5.97; p < .01) as well as higher levels of psychological distress (OR = 1.988; 95% CI 1.211-3.265; p < .01) among select university students. Public health policies aimed at reducing psychological maltreatment may result in the reduction of alcohol misuse.
