Summary: | Underage drinking is a problem among Caribbean youths, however little information is known of the interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that are seen in association with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. This article serves to highlight some socioecological aspects in the Caribbean that may contribute to underage drinking. Data was used from a regional survey conducted by Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD). Interpersonal factors such as, increased shared meals between parent and adolescent decreases the risk of the adolescent engagement in underage drinking. Furthermore, good quality father-adolescent relationship, have shown to statistically significantly reduce underage drinking. Whereas, increase drinking habits exhibited parents and the increased number of peers who consume alcohol have shown to increase risk of underage drinking. A good mother-adolescent relationship and the adolescent's perception of the harmfulness of regular consumption of alcohol, have shown statistical significance. These results suggest that greater efforts need to be implemented at the intrapersonal and interpersonal levels in the Caribbean, to reduce underage drinking. |
