Summary: | Using fully integrated and automated physical models of a tundish and a mould (strand) of a two-strand continuous slab caster, grade transitions experiments were performed. With this experimental setup, the procedure adopted in the industry during grade transition was rigorously reproduced. The effects of the minimum liquid level in the tundish, time kept at this minimum level and inlet flowrate into the tundish during level recovery on the intermixing length were determined. The positive effect of decreasing the liquid level in the tundish was demonstrated. It was also shown that predictions neglecting mixing in the mould tend to underestimate the intermixing length. The time kept at the minimum level showed a slight effect on the length of the intermixed slab. No clear effect of the inlet flowrate into the tundish during level recovery was identified in the range of flowrates tested. The predictions of a similar version of a previously developed mathematical model presented good agreement with the experimental results. |
