Description
Summary:In recent years, the large influx of new psychoactive substances (NPS) made available for sale over the Internet has created a challenge for clinical toxicology and drug testing laboratories. About 100 new compounds per year are emerging. Dominating NPS substances are synthetic cannabinoids and cathinones, as well as other stimulants, analgetics, and hallucinogens. Chromatographic screening methods allow many substances to be screened in a single analytical investigation, offer the possibility of lower reporting limits, and find more positives. In this perspective special feature article, Olof Beck and coworkers present a simple, validated and clinically applied multicomponent LC-HRMS method suitable for screening many target analytes belonging mainly to the NPS class of drugs. Novel features of the method developed include the possibility of rapid analysis of many NPS not yet detected by immunochemical screening as well as keeping constant and rapid updates as novel NPS appear on the market. Dr Beck is adjunct professor and director of the Pharmacology Laboratory at the Karolinska University Laboratory, Department of Clinical Pharmacology (Stockholm, Sweden). His main research interests are centered on method developments in pharmacology and toxicology with a special focus on mass spectrometry, alcohol biomarkers and toxicology.
