Summary:In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cigarette smoke constituents such as acrolein potently inhibit the breakdown of PGP by LTA4H without affecting LTB4 generation. METHODS Neutrophils were purified from fresh peripheral blood of healthy volunteers using the Ficoll-Hypaque technique and exposed to 30 minute stimulation with 2nM formyl-Met-Leu-Phe, cigarette smoke extract, or left quiescent at 37C.
