Summary:Rationale: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by episodes of exacerbation, associated with acute decline in lung function, with a variable recovery period. Patients were recruited from an inner-city tertiary care hospital located in New York City and stratified in two groups: 1) Exacerbation group: patients presenting to the outpatient clinic, emergency department or hospital with an acute asthma exacerbation; 2) Control group: patients with uncontrolled asthma presenting to the outpatient clinic without an acute exacerbation at the time of enrollment.
