Summary: | Corresponding author's email: rkhemani@chla.usc.edu Introduction Work of Breathing (WOB) measurements may be helpful in a variety of disease conditions, but accurate measurement requires esophageal pressure and spirometry. While it may be possible to substitute calibrated Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography (RIP) for spirometry in WOB calculations, effort of breathing (EOB) measurements have theoretical advantages over WOB measurements because they require only esophageal pressure, and will account for situations where transpulmonary pressure increases without changes in volume (i.e. intrinsic PEEP). |
