Summary: | An abstract of a study by Saldanha et al assessing the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among well adolescents, adolescents with eating disorders (EDs), and obese adolescents. Results showed that of the 61 patients in the study, 55 (90.2%) were female and 41 were white (67.2%). The mean age was 16.4 years. There were 38 patients with EDs (62.3%), and 14 (22.9%) were obese. Vitamin D levels were measured in all seasons with the majority of patients (65.6%) measured in Spring and Summer. The mean vitamin D was 24.6 ng/mL. There were 23 patients (37.7%) who were deficient, 19 (31.1%) who were insufficient, and 19 (31.1%) who had sufficient levels of vitamin D. Non-white patients were more likely to be vitamin D deficient (p=O.O1 1) and those with EDs were more likely to be vitamin D sufficient (p=O.0O8). While not statistically significant, trend data showed that obese patients were more likely to be vitamin D deficient and patients were more likely to be vitamin D deficient in Winter versus any other season. |
