Description
Summary:An abstract of a study by Terrell et al examining the comfort level of School Based Health Centers (SBHC) staff with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) topics is presented. The full Staying Mature and Responsible About Sex for SBHC curricula was drafted by a health educator trained by the author/developer of SSI who had experience teaching the intervention in community clinic sites. The curricula was reviewed for medical accuracy and age-appropriateness by clinicians and staff from community partner organizations who had participated in the full trial of Safer Sex Intervention. Data collected from satisfaction survey at two schools indicated attitudes about health education were positive and identified a need for SRH education: 60% and 74% of respondents answered they 'definitely' or 'probably' would visit the SBHC for health education and patients at both schools ranked the same two topics first--Healthy Eating (53%/56%) and second--Healthy Relationships (37%/49%) with additional SRH topics (e.g. How to use Condoms. Birth Control. Saying No to Sex) also ranking high. Clinic staff indicated a need for education services although sustainability and funding were mentioned concerns in addition to the need for clarity on minor consent Jaws and related legislation. Evaluation of program effectiveness in reducing sexual risk and uptake of the curricula in a variety of school based sites are ongoing.
