Summary:* On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483, handed down its long-awaited decision in the public school segregation cases. The cases directly involved South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Kansas and the District of Columbia (Mason and Beaney, 1964: 18). However, the answer which the court gave affected a total of 17 states which required segregation in public schools.
