Description
Summary:In return for the funds, schools agreed to hire full-time school library media specialists, keep the library open and accessible to everyone throughout the school day, allow teachers and librarians time to participate in professional development programs, and increase their spending for books, software, and educational materials (Zweizig and Hopkins 1999). Funds were earmarked to develop library collections aligned to support learners engaged in a standards-based curriculum; develop library media centers designed to encourage higher levels of literacy and student achievement among adolescents for the twenty-first century; and nave teachers, parents and the community engaged in the library media center as the huh of small learning communities in high school. In 3005, with the grant period over, it was reported that library circulation had at least doubled at all sites, an increased number of individual students visited the library media center, teacher visits increased an average of 30 percent, and the three library media centers raised more than a quarter of a million dollars through collaboration with local partners (Public Education Network 2005), Moreover, Mission High School, which received the grant funds in San Francisco, received honorable mention in the 3005 Teachers and Media Specialists Influencing Student Achievement (TEAMS) Awards (Thomson Gale 2006).
