Summary: | Craig S. Cashwell Mississippi State University James M. Benshoff University of North Carolina at Greensboro Merrily Dunn Mississippi State University Providing opportunities for professional support and development for residence hall staff is increasingly important as residence life offices endeavor to strengthen programs and retain staff (Dunkel & Schreiber, 1992). [...]the paucity of published articles related to this topic suggests that attention to the professional development needs of Resident Directors (RDs) seems to have increased little since Miller (1974) noted that "residence education programs probably do a far better job of implementing inservice programs for their paraprofessional members [RAs] than they do for their professional staff [RDs]" (p. 166). Previous researchers have identified a number of benefits of peer consultation groups, including peers as models (Fraleigh & Buccheimer, 1969), lack of evaluation (Benshoff, 1992), and reassurance that others are experiencing similar feelings and concerns (Borders, 1991). |
