Description
Summary:The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development was held in October 2016 in Quito, Ecuador, and was attended by more than 36,000 participants from 167 countries. The conference culminated with the adoption of the New Urban Agenda (NUA), which was ratified by the UN General Assembly on Dec 23, 2016. The Vancouver Declaration on Human Settlements (the first of the urban agendas) was adopted in 1976 during the economic crisis that was taking a heavy toll on the Fordist-Keynesian system that had prevailed since the end of WWII in the industrial heartlands of Europe and North America. The NUA is now a historical document against which people shall measure their cities of tomorrow; whether its lofty ambition is realized will likely depend on the extent to which a bewildering number of voices can cohere into inclusive and durable coalitions. Here, Schindler discusses the adoption of the new urban agenda conference.
