Summary:The paper is aimed to develop an approach to track and analyse the short term economic evolution of the spanish regions in comparison to the national performance. We consider a technique focused on the estimation of composite indicators for each region and the national level using homogeneous economic individual indicators. The use of this data series requires an individual statistical treatment that we discuss. We contrast the accuracy and reliability of the quarterly composite indicators in a regional application for the spanish case using data for the period 1995-2003.
