Description
Summary:It is argued that the material benefits of the UK annual reports of the public health do not warrant an overly substantial amount of dedicated time. A 5-year cycle of strategic development is more appropriate than the annual reports and would provide for timely, considered, and responsive use of census statistics and mortality statistics, extended by a wider range of health and social statistics, and by their planned augmentation by contemporaneous interview surveys and structured group data collection. For the decennial census of population to be effective as a data source, it must be used in conjunction with other sources of hard data. Methods for collecting and incorporating qualitative data must be developed, together with a framework for informed policy analysis, which would facilitate a participative dialogue compatible with the aims of the new public health.
