Summary: | The way anthologies present poetry influences how audiences see poetry. The earliest known poetry collection was the 'Greek Anthology,' published in 60 BC, and collected short poems. 'Tottel's Miscellany,' from 1557, attempted to include only poems which elevated the spirit, but was short on substance. Sir Francis Palgrave collected the 'Golden Treasury' in 1861, focusing on lyric poetry. Norton Publishing Co.'s poetry anthology is oriented toward college English departments, but presents 1,400 poems without the social and human context that makes them meaningful. |
