Summary: | Hawkins explains how Dante uses the authority of Vigil as a poet and guide to give authority to his own text, and then deftly co-opts that authority in order to proclaim himself as a master poet. In doing so, Dante also appropriates unprecedented authority for his text and its message, which is both spiritual and political, inscribing the realm of the unknown heaven with the known figures of literary and Italian political history as he makes spiritual claims, thereby blurring the distinction between the real and his own artifice. |
