Summary:This article describes practices effective in assessing communication and language in persons with autism. We begin with a review of the basic principles that govern assessment in the discipline of speech-language pathology. This is followed by a discussion of features associated with the syndrome of autism that impact communication and language assessment. A few general strategies to address these features are provided. We conclude with a presentation of assessment protocols useful for persons with autism at all functioning levels.
