Summary: | Although the concern for the hygiene goes back to the Antiquity, it is during the nineteenth century when it acquires a scientific understanding. Through the newspapers of that time it becomes evident to what extent hygiene is conceived as a medicine of the everyday, which regulates both the private and the public life. Hygiene is perceived as synonymous with modernity and progress, and also as strongly linked to the space of our cities. In sanitary campaigns and in the hygienist columns of the nineteenth-century press, a discourse with its own rhetoric and vocabulary is created. |
