Summary: | The traumatic injury of the organs of the abdominal cavity brings with it a high morbidity and mortality if it is not suspected, evaluated and diagnosed in a timely manner. Therefore, it is essential to make an adequate diagnosis of lesions of organs of the abdominal cavity through the use of accessible methods for decision making in patients. For this reason, the use of diagnostic laparoscopy in a second level hospital was evaluated. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo, Azogues-Ecuador. We included 218 patients evaluated by diagnostic laparoscopy and 44 patients by FAST ultrasound. The data obtained were evaluated in the statistical program SPSS, version 15. The qualitative variables were represented as absolute and relative frequencies (percentage). The majority of patients were male (diagnostic laparoscopy group: 79.8%, n=174 and FAST ultrasound group: 68.2%, n=30). The most frequent age was from 31 to 40 years and the main etiology was traffic accidents. Diagnostic laparoscopy gave a greater number of positive results (74.8%) compared to the FAST ultrasound group (54.5%). The duration of the diagnostic method was shorter in laparoscopy, where 60.1% lasted 6-10 minutes; compared to FAST ultrasound whose duration was 16-20 minutes in 52.3% of patients. Diagnostic laparoscopy has been proposed in closed abdominal trauma with highly satisfactory and promising results, although there is no unanimity for its use as a routine method, especially in relation to the cost of the procedure, however diagnostic laparoscopy is a safe procedure, well tolerated that even is done with local anesthesia reducing the anesthetic risks to the maximum. |
