description The quantitative and qualitative analysis of inventory numbers, stamps, bookplates, notes on the about 1400 publications of the 'Sala Classici' of the Library of the National Archaeological Museum in Naples has revealed the provenance of many books, divided among religious orders, private collectors, libraries of Naples, Rome and abroad. It is noteworthy the identification of seven books belonging to Domenico Cotugno (1736-1822), renowned doctor and bibliophile, of some booklets from the library of the Scuola Archeologica di Pompei, abolished in 1875, and of a 'medina', a precious binding from the collection of Ramiro Guzmán, duke of Medina de Las Torres and viceroy of Naples (1637-1644). Moreover through the dating of the stamp «Biblioteca del Museo Nazionale Napoli», marked on most of the volumes, and the related inventory numbers it has been possible to highlight some information about the origins of the library that appears to be an organized entity independent from the Museum collections during the Nineties of the XIX Century.
