Description
Summary:Concerns about drinking water also surfaced last week in Quebec, with the publication of a study in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology (2000; 46: 565-76) indicating that Quebecers who obtain their potable water from the St Lawrence hydrological basin are at "elevated" risk of contracting giardiasis. Conducted by a team of five scientists headed by the Institute Armand-Frappier's Pierre Payment, the study reveals that only 12 of 45 water-treatment plants between Montreal and Quebec City were able to achieve the desired minimum annual risk-infection figure (1:10 000) for giardiasis in the winter months. Even in the summer, when more ozone and chlorine are used to purify the water, there were still 11 treatment plants which did not meet the standard, the authors say.
