Summary:The automobile industry has long been viewed as a key sector for business economists in preparing their assessments of macroeconomic activity. Central bankers are also concerned about developments in the industry for similar reasons. However, from the perspective of central bankers in the developed world, the auto sector provides insights beyond macroeconomic analysis. As a key barometer of adjustments in the manufacturing sector, the industry provides substantial insights essential to formulating monetary policy. The insights offered are particularly important in periods of substantial adjustments in the economy.
