description The Kaleidoscope Career Model (KCM) is used to help explain employees' career choices (Mainiero & Sullivan, 2005) and proposes during different periods in people's lives, authenticity, balance, and challenge influence career development. Although academic inquiry into the KCM is on the rise, it has yet to be applied within a sport context. This chapter explored the career needs of male and female head coaches working at the NCAA Division I level. An online survey was e-mailed to all head coaches working at D-I colleges and universities across the United States with a final sample of (N = 840). Findings suggest the challenge career need best-described coaches. Also, there was a significant difference between male and female coaches' need for balance. Results support recent literature emphasizing the importance of balance for male coaches. Further inquiry may help administrators make important decisions about human resource practices that support their coaches.
