Description
Summary:Perfect accuracy and performance are needed in today's production systems. In response to this need, several approaches to production control have been developed and publicized over the past 2 decades. Material requirements planning (MRP) and manufacturing resource planning (MRP II) have been discussed and implemented widely, with varying degrees of success. Just-in-time (JIT) systems have also received wide recognition, largely as a result of the success ascribed to such techniques in manufacturing operations in Japan. Optimized production technology (OPT), also called management by the theory of constraints, has likewise received a good deal of attention. A case study is presented to illustrate how basic characteristics of each approach can be combined to take advantage of strengths from each approach. The results indicate that no one production-control technique dominates. Each has strengths and weaknesses, and each seems appropriate in some situations.
